Saif Ali Khan Updates: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan sustained grievous injuries after he was stabbed six times by an intruder at his residence in Mumbai’s Bandra area in the early hours of Thursday, police said.

The incident took place when the accused entered Mr Khan’s house for an attempted burglary. Doctors said that Mr Khan, who is undergoing treatment at Lilavati Hospital, is “out of danger”. “We removed a 2.5-inch piece of knife from the spine,” the hospital’s Chief Operating Officer Dr Niraj Uttamani said.

A preliminary probe into the incident suggested the intruder did not force his entry or break into the actor’s 12th floor flat in Satguru Sharan building, but possibly sneaked in at some point earlier in the night, a police officer said.

The attack triggered a political row, with NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar saying the knife attack shows the law and order situation is deteriorating in Maharashtra. Various other opposition leaders said the incidents shows that not even celebrities are safe in the state, and that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, has failed to maintain law and order.

Mr Fadnavis termed the attack “unfortunate” but said it is wrong to brand the city as unsafe.
