Punjab’s caretaker Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, has announced an independent audit of the free flour scheme following allegations of corruption by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. Abbasi alleged that billions of rupees were embezzled in the distribution of free flour to deserving individuals during Ramadan.
In a tweet from his official handle, Naqvi termed the allegations by some PML-N leaders regarding the ‘Free Atta Scheme’ as baseless and stated that an independent audit was being conducted in the interest of transparency and financial prudence. The interim government has decided to conduct an immediate audit through the Auditor General Pakistan (AGP) office and simultaneously through a private audit firm of established international repute.
Furthermore, the interim Chief Minister informed that a request has been sent to the Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to investigate the program and verify if any corrupt practices were involved.
Abbasi had claimed at a ceremony in Lahore that around Rs20 billion were embezzled from the federal and provincial governments’ free flour distribution scheme. He criticized the system, stating that corruption had become rampant and questioned the benefits received by the poor from the allocated subsidy of Rs84 billion for providing free flour during Ramadan.
In response to Abbasi’s allegations, both the Centre and the caretaker government of Punjab rejected his claims. Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized that millions of poor people across various provinces were provided free flour during Ramadan with full transparency and honesty. She highlighted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visits to flour distribution points in different cities as evidence of the government’s commitment to transparent service delivery.
